Relief from Deir el-Bahri

Painted relief from Queen/Pharaoh Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple, the Djeser- Djeseru, Holy of Holies, in Deir el-Bahari. The relief is from the Chapel of Hathor, part of the mortuary temple built in the 15th century BC. Hathor was a major goddess in the ancient Egyptian Pantheon, who personified the principles of joy, feminine love, and motherhood.

The relief depicts Hatshepsut's trading expedition to the mysterious 'Land of Punt'. In the scene, Egyptian soldiers bear tree branches and axes. The Land of Punt, called Pwenet, or Pwene by the ancient Egyptians, was a trading partner known for producing and exporting gold, aromatic resins, African blackwood, ebony, ivory, slaves and wild animals.
