Ramesses, beloved of Amun

We bring you another statue of Ramesses II today, one that is not so well known, and looking at it you may not immediately associate it with Ramesses II. This seated statue of Ramesses II wearing the Double Crown was probably carved early in the reign of the king.

The Double Crown - sekhemty - or The Two Powerful Ones, combined the White Hedjet Crown of Upper Egypt and the Red Deshret Crown of Lower Egypt. The first documented inscription of the Double Crown was of the First Dynasty pharaoh Djet, where a rock inscription shows his Horus wearing it.

This statue of Ramesses II was made of granite from a special quarry where veins of red and grey were found next to each other, probably quarried somewhere in the south of Egypt.

The statue can be viewed today in the Luxor Museum.
